European Parliament Press Conference Calls for Investigation into Meta Over Systemic Censorship Democratic Voices

Hosted by Alexandra Geese MEP (Greens/EFA), Shadow Rapporteur on the Digital Services Act (DSA), and Martha Dimitratou, Founder and Executive Director of Repro Uncensored, a press conference will take place in the European Parliament on 8 July, bringing together creators, civil society organisations and digital rights advocates to address the growing censorship of lawful public interest content relating to women's rights, reproductive health, LGBTQI+ rights, public health and democratic participation on Meta's platforms.

Across Europe, journalists, educators, activists and civil society organisations increasingly report that lawful, evidence-based content is being removed, hidden or penalised on Instagram despite complying with platform policies. These practices raise serious concerns about freedom of expression, access to information, democratic participation, and Meta's compliance with the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA).

Repro Uncensored has documented more than 500 incidents of account suspensions, content removals, shadow banning and other forms of platform enforcement in 2026 alone, compared with approximately 240 cases documented across the entirety of 2025. The documented incidents affect reproductive health organisations, LGBTQI+ groups, artists, educators, cultural institutions and civil society organisations across Europe and beyond.

In response to these growing patterns, Repro Uncensored and a coalition of affected organisations have initiated legal action against Meta in the Netherlands, raising broader concerns about transparency, accountability, non-discrimination, and users' rights under European law.

"Across Europe, Meta is not just moderating content – it is quietly sidelining feminist, queer and pro-democracy voices while its algorithms push misogyny and hate into millions of feeds. That is not a glitch, it is political censorship and a clear breach of the Digital Services Act. The European Commission must fully enforce the DSA, investigate Meta, and make clear that in Europe our fundamental rights are not optional for Big Tech."

— Alexandra Geese, Greens/EFA MEP and Shadow Rapporteur on the Digital Services Act

"Big Tech platforms have become essential infrastructure for democratic participation, public health, culture and community. They shape how people access information, organise, express themselves and participate in democratic life.

At Repro Uncensored, we have documented more than 400 cases of platform censorship in 2026 alone, affecting feminist organisations, reproductive health providers, LGBTQI+ communities, artists and civil society across Europe. These are not isolated moderation decisions—they reveal a broader pattern of opaque platform governance with profound consequences for fundamental rights.

When lawful organisations are made invisible without transparency or meaningful avenues for redress, the consequences extend far beyond a single account. They undermine freedom of expression, access to information and democratic participation.

The Digital Services Act makes clear that dominant platforms have responsibilities to respect users' rights and provide transparency and accountability. Those obligations must be enforced. The health of our digital public sphere is inseparable from the health of our democracies."

— Martha Dimitratou, Founder & Executive Director, Repro Uncensored

During the press conference, affected creators and organisations will share first-hand testimony about account suspensions, reduced visibility and other forms of platform enforcement despite publishing lawful content serving the public interest. Speakers will argue that these cases should not be understood as isolated moderation disputes, but as part of a broader pattern with significant implications for freedom of expression, access to information, public health, democratic participation and platform accountability across Europe.

The speakers will call on the European Commission to investigate Meta's compliance with the Digital Services Act, ensure meaningful transparency around moderation decisions, strengthen users' rights to appeal and redress, and safeguard fundamental rights, democratic participation and access to information online.
