The First Global Fake Abortion Map
A Shake the Dust and Share Net Netherlands project, embedded in partnership with Repro Uncensored
Across the world, people searching for abortion care are being deliberately misled. On Google Maps and other platforms, anti choice organisations often present themselves as legitimate clinics, using vague language, strategic branding, and misleading information. These crisis pregnancy centres, also known as fake clinics, are designed to delay, shame, or deter people from accessing abortion.
Shake the Dust and Share Net Netherlands created the first Global Fake Abortion Map to counter these tactics. The map documents more than 200 deceptive centres across the region and has been featured in Vice Global News and Il Post. It is now a key resource for researchers, journalists, and advocates.
Repro Uncensored is supporting the expansion of this work globally.
Why this matters
Fake clinics rely on invisibility and digital manipulation. Search engines frequently recommend anti choice centres that:
• Withhold or distort medical information
• Avoid specifying whether they provide abortion or referrals
• Use pressure or emotional tactics to steer people toward continuing pregnancies or adoption
• Rely on ideological or religious messaging disguised as care
• Target vulnerable communities through misleading services
This mapping initiative exposes these practices and shows how coordinated and widespread the network truly is.
A living and open source tool
The Global Fake Abortion Map is designed to grow through public contributions. By adding new entries, communities and advocates can:
• Increase visibility of anti-choice strategies that operate both online and offline
• Provide evidence for journalists, researchers, and policymakers
• Hold digital platforms accountable for promoting harmful search results
• Put accurate information back into the hands of the public through open and transparent data
