Instagram Fails to Respond After Account Hack and Ransom Attempt

On April 8, 2026, the Instagram account @acceptandproceed, a London-based purpose-led design and consulting practice, was compromised. Control of the account was taken over, and a message was posted asking for payment in exchange for restoring access.

Accept & Proceed works across climate, data protection, and social impact, collaborating with organizations and communities to build projects grounded in ethics, sustainability, and equity. With more than 38,000 followers, their account was a key space for sharing work, research, and community-driven initiatives.

Following the takeover, the account’s content was removed and access restricted. Despite multiple appeals and attempts to recover the account, no timely or effective support has been provided. The account effectively “no longer exists” within the platform’s systems, leaving no clear pathway for reporting or restoration.

This case reflects a growing pattern in which accounts are hacked and held for ransom, while platform response systems fail to provide meaningful protection or recovery options. As reliance on digital infrastructure deepens, these failures have direct consequences on people’s work, visibility, and ability to operate.

This is not an isolated incident. It highlights broader systemic gaps in platform accountability, where users are left without support in moments of critical need.
