Meta removed a political mobilization video and restricted an LGBTQIA+ Instagram account amid wider reports concerning thousands of other accounts during Brazil's presidential election. OpenAI separately banned an account associated with the independent Acervo Lula initiative.

What happened?
During Brazil's 2026 presidential election, Meta and OpenAI separately imposed account restrictions affecting independent political and LGBTQIA+ initiatives. The incidents occurred amid wider concerns about platform moderation, political participation and access to information during a critical electoral period.
Instagram removed a political mobilization video published by História LGBTQIA+ (@historialgbtqia_) , an account dedicated to documenting LGBTQIA+ history and communicating about social and political rights. The video promoted Acervo Lula, an independent, community-led initiative collecting materials, information and resources for political mobilization.
According to reporting by Alma Preta, the video was published on October 9 and removed by Instagram on October 11 after reportedly being classified as sexual content. At the time of removal, it had already accumulated hundreds of thousands of views. The publication was restored on October 12 following an appeal.
On October 13, Instagram imposed another restriction, this time blocking the account's ability to send direct messages. The penalty was initially scheduled to last approximately 30 days and cited alleged violations involving prohibited commercial practices. The restriction was reversed after a second appeal on the same day.
Followers also reported difficulties liking, commenting on and sharing the account's publications. The available evidence does not establish whether these problems resulted from account-level restrictions, temporary technical failures or other factors.
OpenAI's reported account ban
Separately, organizers connected to Acervo Lula reported that OpenAI had banned an account used to support their independent digital archive. According to the organizers, the account had been used with Codex to assist with processing images and event materials.
OpenAI reportedly cited "coordinated deceptive behavior" as the reason for the suspension. The organizers disputed that characterization and said their appeal was rejected, without receiving a detailed explanation of what activity had triggered the ban.
The available documentation does not establish why OpenAI classified the activity as deceptive or whether the decision was related to the election. There is also no evidence that Meta and OpenAI coordinated the restrictions.
Part of a wider pattern
The restrictions occurred amid broader concerns about Meta's treatment of political accounts during Brazil's presidential election. Reports of content removals, reduced visibility, suspensions and other platform restrictions have affected political commentators, journalists, LGBTQIA+ advocates and civil society organizers.
These concerns extend beyond the individual accounts documented in this case. A legal petition filed during the election sought restrictions affecting a wider network of 1,525 profiles, while civil society groups have raised concerns involving many other accounts. The proposed judicial measures and independently documented platform penalties should not be conflated.
Meta has denied deliberately favoring or disadvantaging political candidates and has attributed several reported problems to technical errors or platform enforcement systems. Allegations of politically motivated restrictions remain contested.
Nevertheless, these developments raise important questions about transparency, due process and the impact of platform decisions on democratic participation.

Why it matters
Social media platforms and digital tools are essential infrastructure for journalists, activists and grassroots movements. When access is interrupted during an election, the consequences can extend beyond the affected account to the communities and information networks that depend on it.
Democratic participation
Restrictions can interrupt the circulation of information and the ability to organize during time-sensitive political events.
Marginalized communities
LGBTQIA+ groups and human rights advocates rely on digital platforms for visibility, connection and public engagement.
Platform accountability
Clear explanations, proportionate enforcement and meaningful appeal mechanisms are essential to protect freedom of expression.
Repro Uncensored is working to document these incidents, support affected accounts and push for stronger safeguards against unjustified content removals, suspensions and other platform restrictions.
