Health Brigades in the Colombian Amazon – Leticia Program

Repro Uncensored will be on the ground in Leticia, Colombia, with our correspondent Luisa Orosco, documenting and reporting on health brigades bringing essential care to communities across the Amazon.

Located at the tri-border of Colombia, Peru, and Brazil, Leticia is a remote city with no road connections to the rest of the country, where access to healthcare remains deeply limited. Health brigades play a critical role in reaching both urban and dispersed Indigenous communities with services including general medicine, pediatrics, psychology, and dentistry.

A key focus of this work is cervical cancer screening. Using methods such as visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), providers can detect early signs of cervical abnormalities linked to HPV within minutes, making it a vital tool in low-resource and hard-to-reach settings.

These brigades enable early detection and, in some cases, same-day treatment through procedures such as cryotherapy or thermal ablation, while also providing counseling and continuity of care.

Through this work, Repro Uncensored contributes to documenting access gaps, amplifying frontline efforts, and bringing visibility to healthcare delivery in remote regions.
