In February 2025, Meta suspended the WhatsApp account used by MSI Mexico, a leading abortion provider. WhatsApp—owned by Meta—was the organization’s main channel for booking abortion appointments and providing support, especially for people in remote or underserved areas.
More than three months later, the account had still not been reinstated. Meta provided no explanation for the suspension, despite the urgent health needs it disrupted.
MSI and Women’s Link Worldwide submitted a formal appeal to the Meta Oversight Board, calling for the account to be reinstated and for Meta to review its policies around reproductive health communication.
This case highlights that censorship is not limited to public platforms like Instagram and Facebook—it’s also happening in private, encrypted spaces like WhatsApp, where people turn for confidential, life-saving information.
